Nepal, Enfance et Lumière obviously struck a chord with NEDWA members as it was voted for, by the members at the recent AGM, as the charity for 2020. Any charity funds raised during the year will be donated to this marvellous cause.
For 2019 our chosen charity was Nepal, Enfance et Lumiere. The association aims to fully support girls of the poorest families to enable them to follow a good education. The youngest and university students live in our home run by Sushi, a street girl whose meeting was at the origin of the creation of NEL by Michèle and Pierre-André Heller.
This action is mainly aimed at girls because:
The literacy rate which was 44.5% at the end of the 20th century has increased significantly but still remains lower than that of men: 80% for women aged 15 to 24 against 90% for men of the same age.
In addition, girls are confronted with the problem of early marriages.

Christine Acker-Griffin, a NEDWA lady, spent the day manning a stall at St.Paul on 30th May in order to raise money for Nepal, Enfance et Lumiere – the NEDWA chosen charity for 2019. Despite a quiet day, the sum of €80 was raised for the Charity.
The Coffee morning on Tuesday 17th September 2019 included the showing of a film about the NEDWA chosen charity for 2019, Nepal -Enfance et Lumiére. It was an atmospheric film capturing the beauty and hardship of an amazing country, explaining some of the anomalies of a very different culture. It also highlighted the essential work of the charity in identifying, assisting and sponsoring Nepalese girls, in some very challenging circumstances, to be homed and educated in a nurturing and loving environment.
There was a small stall selling beautiful, handmade items from Nepal that attracted a lot of willing buyers!
